MADELINE + DAWSON · BEND, OREGON

A little western, a little wild.

A cinematic engagement session at Sparks Lake in Central Oregon.

SPARKS LAKE · CENTRAL OREGON

Before the light got soft.

Madeline and Dawson met me at Sparks Lake outside of Bend, Oregon, while the sun was still high and the light was anything but subtle.

Instead of waiting around for golden hour, we leaned into it. Direct sunlight, deep shadows, denim, movement, and the wide-open Central Oregon landscape gave the whole evening this slightly western, cinematic feeling that fit the two of them perfectly.

Nothing too polished. Nothing too precious. Just the two of them being together somewhere ridiculously beautiful

Sparks Lake is the kind of place that makes it easy to understand why I love photographing people in big landscapes. There are Cascade views in nearly every direction, open meadows, forest, water, and enough room to move around without every photograph feeling like it was made in the exact same spot.

For this session, we let the landscape set the tone. We wandered, chased the light, used the harsher sun instead of hiding from it, and let things get a little imperfect. The result feels less like a traditional engagement session and more like a collection of stills from somewhere Madeline and Dawson actually existed together.

ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS AT SPARKS LAKE

Let the place be part of it.

Sparks Lake sits along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway just outside of Bend, surrounded by some of the scenery that makes Central Oregon feel like Central Oregon: open meadows, pine forests, water, and the Cascades stretching out behind it.

While Madeline and Dawson came out here for their engagement session, places like this are exactly why I love photographing weddings in Oregon. Whether you're planning an intimate wedding surrounded by the mountains, celebrating at a venue in Bend or Sunriver, or just want to sneak away somewhere beautiful for portraits on your wedding day, the landscape gets to become part of the story without taking it over.

I was born and raised in Central Oregon, so this part of the state will always feel like home. If you're planning a wedding in Bend or elsewhere in Central Oregon, I'd love to hear where you're headed and what you're dreaming up.

PLANNING A WEDDING IN CENTRAL OREGON?

Imagine getting married out here.

Maybe it’s somewhere in the mountains, somewhere you already love, or somewhere we have to pull over because the light is too good to keep driving.

If you’re planning a wedding in Oregon and want photographs that feel like the people, place, and everything that happened in between, tell me what you’re dreaming up.

YOUR STORY COULD BE NEXT

Meet me somewhere beautiful.
