What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Virginia | A Photographer's Guide

One of the most common questions couples ask after booking their engagement session is:

"What should we wear?"

The good news is that there isn't one perfect answer.

The best engagement session outfits are the ones that help you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourselves. Your clothing should complement your surroundings and your connection, not distract from them.

As a Virginia engagement photographer, I've photographed couples in every season and setting imaginable, from mountain overlooks and forest trails to city streets and quiet backyards. Over time, I've found that a few simple guidelines consistently help create timeless, cinematic images.

Start with Neutral and Earth Tones

When in doubt, keep things simple.

Neutral colors and earth tones photograph beautifully because they don't compete with the landscape or pull attention away from your faces.

Some of my favorite colors for engagement sessions include:

  • Cream

  • Beige

  • Camel

  • Olive

  • Rust

  • Sage Green

  • Soft Blue

  • Brown

  • Charcoal

  • Dusty Rose

These colors tend to work beautifully throughout Virginia's changing seasons.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Gone are the days of identical white shirts and jeans.

Instead of matching exactly, choose outfits that complement one another.

Think of your clothing as part of the same visual story.

Different textures, tones, and layers often create more depth and visual interest than identical outfits.

Consider the Season

Spring Engagement Photos

Soft pastels, light neutrals, and flowing fabrics work beautifully alongside Virginia's fresh greenery and blooming flowers.

Summer Engagement Photos

Breathable fabrics and lighter colors help keep sessions comfortable during warmer months.

Fall Engagement Photos

Fall is one of the most popular seasons for engagement photography in Virginia.

Warm earth tones like rust, olive, camel, and deep burgundy pair beautifully with autumn foliage.

Winter Engagement Photos

Layered outfits, coats, sweaters, and textured fabrics create a cozy, romantic feel while adding visual depth to your images.

Don't Be Afraid of Movement

Flowing dresses, skirts, coats, and layered fabrics photograph beautifully because they create natural movement.

As someone whose style is heavily influenced by filmmaking and storytelling, I love incorporating motion into engagement sessions whenever possible.

Movement helps photographs feel more alive and cinematic.

Wear Something That Feels Like You

This may be the most important advice of all.

If you never wear high heels, your engagement session probably isn't the best time to start.

If a suit feels unnatural, consider a more relaxed look.

The goal isn't to become someone else for your photos.

The goal is to show up as yourselves.

Authenticity always photographs better than discomfort.

Choose Locations and Outfits Together

Your location and wardrobe should work together.

A formal outfit might feel perfect at a historic estate but out of place on a rugged hiking trail.

Likewise, casual clothing may fit beautifully in a forest or field but feel less cohesive in an elegant garden setting.

When couples book with me, I'm always happy to help guide outfit choices based on the location we've selected.

The Best Photos Focus on Connection

At the end of the day, your outfits matter far less than your relationship.

The photographs you'll treasure most won't be the ones where every detail was perfect.

They'll be the moments where you were laughing together.

Holding hands.

Exploring somewhere new.

Sharing a quiet moment when you forgot the camera was even there.

Beautiful engagement photos aren't created by perfect clothing.

They're created by genuine connection.
