An In-Home Family Session in Richmond, Virginia | Candid Family Photography

There is something special about photographing a family in a place that already holds meaning.

Rather than meeting at a park or a curated outdoor location, this family invited me to document a season of life unfolding right in their own backyard. Having recently moved into their new home in Richmond, Virginia, they wanted photographs that felt honest, personal, and connected to the place where so many memories are beginning.

With a toddler exploring every corner of the yard and a newborn nestled safely in their parents' arms, the session felt less like a photoshoot and more like an ordinary afternoon preserved forever.

Why Meaningful Locations Matter

One of the most common questions I receive from families is, "Where should we take our photos?"

The truth is that some of the most meaningful images happen in places that already matter to you.

This family's newly purchased home represented the beginning of a new chapter. The backyard, surrounded by trees and vibrant green grass, provided the perfect backdrop because it reflected their real life in this moment.

Years from now, these photographs won't simply remind them what they looked like. They'll remember the home where they brought their newborn baby, where their toddler played freely in the grass, and where their family started building new traditions together.

A Relaxed Family Session in Richmond

The afternoon brought soft, overcast skies that created beautiful, even light throughout the session.

Without harsh sunlight competing for attention, the focus stayed exactly where it belonged: on connection.

The toddler wandered through the yard, collected sticks, explored the grass, and moved at their own pace. Instead of directing every moment, I photographed the interactions as they naturally unfolded.

These unscripted moments often become the most treasured images because they capture personalities, relationships, and emotions exactly as they are.

Photographing Life With a Toddler and Newborn

Life with a toddler and newborn can feel wonderfully chaotic.

There are snack breaks, diaper changes, moments of laughter, moments of unpredictability, and countless tiny interactions that define this season of life.

As a family photographer, I believe those moments deserve to be documented just as much as the smiling portraits.

During this session, some of my favorite photographs happened between the "planned" moments. A toddler reaching for a parent's hand. A quiet moment with their newborn. A burst of laughter that couldn't have been recreated if we tried.

These are the details that tell a family's story.

A Film-Inspired Approach to Family Photography

My approach to family photography is heavily influenced by film and cinematic storytelling.

Rather than focusing on perfect poses, I create space for genuine interactions to happen naturally. The result is a gallery that feels timeless, emotional, and true to the people in it.

The combination of the forested backyard, soft overcast skies, and the family's natural connection created imagery that feels both intimate and cinematic.

The photographs reflect not just how this season looked, but how it felt.

Why Backyard Family Sessions Are Worth Considering

You don't need a mountain overlook, a flower field, or a carefully selected location to create meaningful family photographs.

Sometimes the best location is your own backyard.

It's where your children play every day. It's where memories are already being made. It's a place that holds significance beyond the photographs themselves.

For families with young children, staying close to home can also create a more relaxed experience and allow everyone to feel comfortable throughout the session.
